ACC leads all conferences with 6 picks in 1st round of NBA Draft

Six former ACC players were selected in the 1st round of the NBA Draft on Thursday night.

The group was headlined by Paolo Banchero, who went No. 1 overall to the Orlando Magic. He became the 4th Duke product to go No. 1 overall since 1999.

Duke put 3 other prospects into the first round, too. First, Mark Williams was selected 15th overall by the Charlotte Hornets. Then, with the very next pick, AJ Griffin was selected 16th by the Atlanta Hawks. And finally, Wendell Moore Jr. was picked 26th overall and will be headed to Minnesota.

Two other ACC prospects also joined the NBA ranks in the first round — Wake Forest’s Jake LaRavia and Notre Dame’s Blake Wesley. LaRavia went 19th to the Memphis Grizzlies and Wesley went 25th to the San Antonio Spurs.

In total, the ACC’s 6 first round picks were the most for any conference.

Duke’s Trevor Keels also was picked on Thursday night. He went off the board to the New York Knicks in the second round.

Other notable prospects like North Carolina’s Brady Manek, Wake Forest’s Alondes Williams, Miami’s Kameron McGusty and NC State’s Dereon Seabron went unselected. However, they could still earn undrafted free agent contracts in the coming days.
