ACC power rankings entering Week 6: Clemson, Louisville make moves up the board
The ACC’s Week 5 is in the books.
The top 3 teams in these power rankings were all idle this week, but programs such as Clemson and Louisville were able to take advantage of their opportunities in Week 5.
It was also a disappointing week for some, as teams like Duke, Syracuse and NC State all suffered losses. There’s move at the back of these rankings, too, as Virginia Tech and Boston College both picked up ACC wins while Virginia, Pitt and Georgia Tech faltered.
Here’s Saturday Road’s updated power rankings for Week 5:
14. Virginia (Last week: 13)
Virginia is 0-5 this season and still has to play North Carolina, Miami, Louisville and Duke. Hope is lost for the Cavaliers in 2023.
13. Pitt (Last week: 11)
Things just keep getting worse for Pitt. The Panthers can only hope that a 17-point loss to Virginia Tech is rock bottom — but it might not be.
12. Georgia Tech (Last week: 9)
Just when it looked like Brent Key had Georgia Tech humming, the Yellow Jackets lose to Bowling Green at home. That might be the worst loss any ACC team has all season.
11. Virginia Tech (Last week: 14)
Virginia Tech moves up 3 spots this week after housing Pittsburgh in Lane Stadium. It’s a stabilizing win for the Hokies, who will now prepare to face Florida State on the road next week.
10. Boston College (Last week: 12)
Boston College picked up a big over Virginia in Week 5. The Eagles are 2-3, but the schedule the rest of the way is very manageable. Boston College could still make a bowl game.
9. Wake Forest (Last week: 10)
Wake Forest was idle in Week 5.
8. NC State (Last week: 8)
The bottom of the ACC is a mess right now, so NC State sticks at No. 8 despite losing a very winnable game to Louisville on Friday night.
7. Syracuse (Last week: 7)
Syracuse got walloped by Clemson in Week 5. The Orange are a talented team, but they caught Clemson in the worst-possible spot — desperate for a win. When they Tigers play like that, they’re going to overwhelm the vast majority of teams in the ACC.
6. Louisville (Last week: 5)
Louisville slides back a spot despite winning in Week 5. The Cardinals’ offense was bad against NC State on Friday night, but the Wolfpack’s offense was still much worse. Louisville is a real threat to make the ACC Championship Game, especially given its schedule the rest of the way.
5. Duke (Last week: 4)
Duke suffered a crushing loss to Notre Dame on Saturday night and may have lost Riley Leonard for a significant period of time in the process. If there’s a bright spot for the Blue Devils, it’s that they are idle in Week 6.
4. Clemson (Last week: 6)
Is it unfair to have Clemson ahead of Duke just 1 month after the Blue Devils beat the Tigers straight up? Probably, yes. If they were to play again next weekend, would I pick Clemson to win? Definitely, yes.
3. Miami (Last week: 3)
Miami enjoyed a well-deserved off day in Week 5. The Hurricanes will begin ACC play this weekend against Georgia Tech, who is coming off of a loss to Bowling Green.
2. North Carolina (Last week: 2)
North Carolina was off in Week 5. Mack Brown’s squad is 4-0 and will face Syracuse this week.
1. Florida State (Last week: 1)
Florida State was idle in Week 5. The Seminoles will face Virginia Tech at home on Saturday as they look to improve to 5-0 and win their 11th straight game dating back to last season.
