Boston College defeats Virginia Tech in Phil Jurkovec’s return

Boston College took care of business on Friday night vs. Virginia Tech, winning 17-3.

This was Boston College’s first win since defeating Missouri back on Sept. 25, and the Eagles did it in style.

Even with the return of Phil Jurkovec, it was Boston College’s defense that stole the show on Friday night. They held the Hokies to just 235 yards and 4.6 yards per play.

Virginia Tech was mostly without starting quarterback Braxton Burmeister, who left the game in the first half with an injury and was not able to return. Backup Knox Kadum wasn’t able to make much of an impact, completing just 7-of-16 passes for 73 yards.

The Hokies managed just 3 total passing yards in the first half and just 12 first downs for the entire game.

Another big factor was Boston College’s ability to control the clock. The Eagles finished the game with a staggering 36:56 time of possession mark and went 6-of-13 on 3rd down.

As for Jurkovec, he made a bigger impact with his legs than with his arm. He completed 7-of-13 passes for 112 yards. But on the ground, he ran the ball 9 times for 65 yards and 1 touchdown. He picked up several key first downs with his legs and was constantly pressuring the Virginia Tech defensive front with his running ability.

The play of the night happened early. After Jurkovec threw an interception to Virginia Tech’s Dorian Strong, the Eagles were able to force a fumble and re-gain possession. Boston College ended up taking a 7-0 lead a few plays later.

Here’s the play:

Boston College is now 5-4 on the season and will have a chance to clinch bowl eligibility in the coming weeks. Virginia Tech moves to 4-5 and will need to show significant improvement in order to avoid not qualifying for a bowl game for the first time since 1992.
