While Brent Venables hasn’t lured any full-time position coaches to Oklahoma yet, he is taking advantage of the Tigers’ extensive support staff.

Oklahoma announced the hiring of Ted Roof as its next defensive coordinator on Friday. He spent the 2021 season as a defensive analyst for the Tigers.

“There have been so many great coaches, players and tough-minded competitors who have made up all the championship teams that have been part of the incredible Oklahoma tradition,” Roof said in a press release. “For me, it is an honor and a privilege to serve on an OU football staff under the strong leadership of Coach Venables.”

Roof has extensive experience as a defensive assistant throughout his career and also is a former head coach at Duke.

The Sooners have also reportedly hired staffer Thad Turnipseed, who has been instrumental in assisting with off-the-field matters for Clemson. He also previously worked for Nick Saban at Alabama.

With Tony Elliott (Virginia) and Dan Radakovich (Miami) also departing in recent days, the 2022 season could prove to be a major test for Dabo Swinney. The continuity he’s enjoyed over the last decade at Clemson will need to be re-established moving forward.

It’s also possible Clemson will lose more staffers to Oklahoma or other programs like Virginia.

Clemson is expected to name replacements at defensive coordinator and offensive coordinator in the coming days.
