Clemson defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin knows what his defense needs to do to stop Notre Dame.

The Week 10 matchup against Notre Dame will be important for Clemson’s College Football Playoff aspirations. It will be a difficult road matchup for Clemson and the defense will need limit Notre Dame’s offense.

While speaking to the media, Goodwin discussed what it will take to slow down Notre Dame.

“You know what you have to stop. You have to stop the run game and the ball is going to No. 87,” Goodwin said, referring to tight end Michael Mayer.

Goodwin pointed out the two key parts of Notre Dame’s offense. Mayer has been the focal point of Notre Dame’s passing game with quarterback Drew Pyne. In the win over Syracuse, Mayer had 3 receptions for 54 yards. He’s the Irish’s leading receiver so far this season with 47 catches for 580 yards.

Notre Dame rushed for 246 yards against Syracuse with major contributions from Audric Estime and Logan Diggs. Each player had 20 carries in the win over the Orange.

Clemson remained undefeated in Week 9 with a 27-21 win over Syracuse. The defense kept Syracuse scoreless in the 2nd half of the comeback win.

Clemson will be on the road against Notre Dame on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
