Clemson lands on cusp of Kirk Herbstreit’s top 4 after Wake Forest win

Clemson pulled out an overtime win over Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon.

The victory keeps Clemson’s College Football Playoff hopes alive and puts the Tigers in the driver’s seat to re-claim the Atlantic division title.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit put Clemson at No. 5 on his College Football Playoff rankings after Week 4. He has the Tigers behind Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama and Michigan.

Georgia, Ohio State and Alabama have all made it through the regular season relatively unscathed. Michigan faltered a bit on Saturday in its first test of the 2022 season, only beating Maryland by 7 points at home. USC is Herbstreit’s No. 6 team after the Trojans beat out Oregon State on Saturday night.

Clemson will host ESPN’s College GameDay crew this weekend. The T

igers are facing an undefeated NC State team that also has College Football Playoff aspirations.

Through 4 games, Clemson’s offense is averaging 43.8 points per game, which ranks No. 2 in the ACC. Only North Carolina has scored more points so far.

Clemson’s defense struggled vs. Wake Forest on Saturday, giving up 45 points and 6 touchdown passes. But the Tigers are dealing with multiple injuries in the secondary and could have a healthy unit vs. NC State on Saturday.

Kickoff is at 8:30 p.m. ET.
