Clemson QB DJ Uiagalelei on offseason weight loss, getting into ‘the best shape of my life’

Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei told reporters on Wednesday that he’s in the “the best shape of my life” ahead of the 2022 season.

Uiagalelei, who struggled to live up to lofty expectations last season, is going to get another chance to lead Clemson back to the College Football Playoff.

By all accounts, Uiagalelei has taken his offseason work seriously. Earlier in the day, he told the ACC Network crew that he didn’t want to take any days off after the 2021 season ended

.

With 5-star freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik coming to campus, Uiagalelei locked in on improving his game. He told reporters he has cut out desserts from his diet since the Cheez-It Bowl in January.

At Clemson’s media day on Tuesday, offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter told reporters that Uiagalelei is down “30-35 pounds” and is coming off a great spring.

Last season, Uiagalelei finished with a passer efficiency rating of 108.65 — dead last amongst qualified passers in the ACC. But with an improved offensive line and a healthier physical frame, the former 5-star prospect could be in for a breakout year in 2022.

Clemson opens this season vs. Georgia Tech on Sept. 5.
