Clemson earned a massive win over North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Tuesday night, 80-76.
The impact of the win is two-fold. For one, it’s a crucial win for a Tigers team that is still building its NCAA Tournament résumé. After a terrific nonconference slate, Clemson now has a signature win it can tout on Selection Sunday. It’s also just the second-ever win for Clemson in Chapel Hill. The Tigers are now 2-60 all-time against UNC on the road.
PJ Hall and Joe Girard were the heroes in this game for Clemson. They led the Tigers in scoring with 24 and 21 points, respectively. Ian Schieffelin also had a big game as he recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Clemson jumped out to a 15-2 lead early in the game and took a 9-point lead into the break. North Carolina made a run in the second half, but the Tar Heels’ offense stalled down the stretch.
Clemson held North Carolina to under 37% shooting from the floor. The Tar Heels entered Tuesday with a top-20 offense nationally according to KenPom’s
adjusted offensive efficiency metric, so that’s a tremendous accomplishment for the Tigers.
The Tigers are now 15-7 overall and 5-6 in ACC play. They will be in action again on Saturday against Syracuse on the road.
