Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is looking for more production from the Tigers’ secondary.

Clemson’s defense struggled mightily vs. Wake Forest last week, allowing quarterback Sam Hartman to throw for 337 yards and 6 touchdowns. That yardage count could have been significantly higher but the Tigers’ committed numerous pass interference penalties as well.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Swinney challenged Clemson’s cornerbacks to be better moving forward.

“It was a rough, rough, rough night for that whole position,” Swinney said, via 247Sports

. “We’ve got to be much better. Hopefully these guys will have a more sense of urgency, be more detailed, and take more ownership of what they’ve got to make sure they’re ready to execute and play the technique to be successful.

“It goes back to some of these guys and preparation and how they prepare when we are not around. Do your job play in and play out. Communication. Know the technique and apply it. Eyes on the right things. Don’t make stuff up. Don’t try to do things that you’re not b

eing coached to do, because that’s when you get in trouble defensively, and that’s been a sign of some of the immaturity that has cost us. We’ve got to get better there because it’s been a problem.”

Clemson was without 3 key defensive back vs. Wake Forest: cornerback Sheridan Jones, cornerback Malcolm Greene and safety Andrew Mukuba.

With those 3 absent, Clemson’s secondary never found its footing. Cornerbacks Nate Wiggins and Toriano Pride were routinely targeted throughout the game.

It’s unclear if Clemson will be healthier in the secondary this week or not. But regardless, the Tigers will hope for better cornerback play vs. NC State this weekend.
