Dabo Swinney made the decision to bench starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei in the third quarter of Clemson’s win over Syracuse on Saturday.

The move paid off, as freshman QB Cade Klubnik led the Tigers to a 27-21 win over the Orange. Clemson scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

However, coach Dabo Swinney was quick to squash any potential QB controversy after the game. He said Uiagalelei will remain Clemson’s starting QB moving forward.

“Sometimes Steph Curry goes 2-for-25,” Swinney said. “DJ got out of rhythm and made some bad plays. DJ is our QB. There ain’t no question about that. DJ is our guy. That’s our leader. You can write that right now. Now he’s got to play better, and he will.”

Klubnik was solid, but unspectacular in leading Clemson to victory. He completed 2-of-4 passes for 19 yards. He also ran the ball 5 times for 16 yards and scored on a 2-point conversion through the air.

Clemson is off in Week 9, getting a much-deserved bye week after its 8-0 start. However, the Tigers will return to action on Nov. 5 at Notre Dame.
