Dabo Swinney explains importance of Clemson winning season-opener vs. Georgia Tech
Clemson is a heavy favorite over Georgia Tech in its season-opener this weekend in Atlanta.
As coach Dabo Swinney pointed out on Thursday morning, whether or not the Tigers have won their season-opener has proved to be a fairly accurate indicator of how their season will go.
Swinney noted that Clemson’s ACC Championship teams are 23-1-2 all-time in season-openers. And since he took over, his 7 ACC title teams are undefeated in Week 1. The same goes for his 6 College Football Playoff squads.

Last season, Clemson lost to eventual national champion Georgia in its opener. The Tigers struggled for the rest of September and ended up losing the ACC Atlantic crown for the first time since 2014.
Swinney also acknowledged the difficulty of preparing for a season-opener.
“All openers are hard — always,” Swinney said. “I think those are the toughest games to prepare for. You’ve got no tape. You’ve had forever to get ready, but no video evidence that they will do what you think they’ll do.”
