Clemson may have found a diamond in the rough with true freshman receiver Cole Turner.

Turner was a 3-star prospect in the Tigers’ 2022 recruiting class and was not highly ranked. He finished at No. 1,385 in the nation, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

But so far in fall camp, Turner has been incredibly impressive. Coach Dabo Swinney took some time after Saturday’s scrimmage to rave about Turner’s talent.

“This kid has unbelievable longterm potential,” Swinney said after the scrimmage. “He could help us this year. I’m hoping we don’t have to have him but he’s making it hard on us. He makes plays every day. Every day. He had 2 big plays today and he gets yards after contact. He’s strong, he’s fast … he’s just got a unique knack for finishing plays.”

Clemson has a deep, albeit unproven, wide receiver corps this season. Returning players like Joseph Ngata, Beaux Collins, Dacari Collins and Brannon Spector are expected to lead the way. The Tigers are also bringing in highly-touted freshman receivers like Antonio Williams and Adam Randall.

That doesn’t leave much of a gap for Turner to make an impact as a true freshman, so it’s possible he will still end up redshirting in 2022. But regardless, Turner impressing Swinney to this degree early on is a great sign.

Turner has multiple family connections to the Tigers’ program. His older brother, Nolan Turner, was an All-American safety at Clemson in 2020. His late father, Kevin Turner, played with Swinney at Alabama.

Clemson opens the 2022 season with Georgia Tech on Sept. 5.
