Dabo Swinney spent some time with Greg McElroy recently, and one of the topics they discussed was the hire of new offensive coordinator Garrett Riley from TCU.
Swinney recalled how he made previous changes, and referenced Billy Napier and Kevin Steele as former members of his staff, and made the point that change isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
As for the latest OC change, Swinney said sometimes you need a “change of voice, a change of energy, maybe a change in demeanor or confidence.” But Swinney also noted that Brandon Streeter deserved he opportunity because of how he recruited and coached Clemson quarterbacks.
Swinney said that while he wants to run the football, Clemson won’t be doing much different.
“But how it’s called, how it’s taught and the demeanor and the energy as well,” he said. “It’s easy to watch him and see why he’s been successful.”
Swinney added that it was a good match philosophically and schematically. Clemson must get better throwing and catching the ball, he said, because Clemson has been elite in those areas, but has not been where it needs to be the last couple of years.
“I think he can help us do that without sacrificing the run game,” Swinney said.
