Dave Clawson spoke candidly about the challenges of facing Clemson during his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

Clawson didn’t shy away from the fact that Clemson has historically recruited at an elite level and is one of the premier programs in the region. He even acknowledged that Clemson’s roster includes a former Wake Forest commit.

“There’s not one guy on their roster that wanted to come to Wake Forest,” Clawson said. “We wanted all those guys. There’s even guys on here that we offered and committed to us and the second Clemson offered them, they didn’t even give us a kiss goodbye. They just left.”

Clawson is presumably referring to Khalil Barnes, who was a 4-star athlete in the class of 2023. Barnes was committed to Wake Forest until October of his senior season when Clemson offered him a scholarship. He ended up signing with the Tigers.

“This is our challenge when we play these guys every year,” Clawson added. “They’ve been at the top of the recruiting charts. Xavier Thomas, Tyler Davis, Barrett Carter, I mean, these guys are pros. They’re a really talented team. Every time we play these guys, the whole has got to be bigger than the sum of their’s. And that’s the challenge.”

Despite the disadvantages Wake Forest has, the Demon Deacons nearly upset the Tigers last season. Clemson needed double overtime to prevail in a back-and-forth contest. Still, Clemson has dominated this series in recent years as it has won 14 in a row vs. Wake.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday night.
