Despite managing perhaps the hottest team in the country, Clemson baseball head coach Erik Bakich believes the Tigers are still playing with house money entering the NCAA Tournament.
Clemson, which sat at .500 midway through the season, has been red-hot in the month of May specifically. The Tigers won the ACC Tournament title on Sunday over Miami, marking 16 straight victories for Bakich’s squad.
Because of its hot streak, Clemson was named one of 16 national seeds and will host a regional next week at the start of the tournament. They drew a tough group, with Tennessee, Charlotte and Lipscomb all heading to the South Carolina upstate to try and dethrone the Tigers.
Bakich explained the Tigers’ “house money” mindset Monday, insisting that Clemson is playing as if it has nothing to lose heading into next week despite being a top 4 national seed.
Clemson’s first game of the Clemson regional is set for 1 p.m. on Friday against Lipscomb. The winner advances to play the winner of Charlotte/Tennessee Saturday in a double elimination tournament bracket.
