ESPN names Clemson’s ‘fatal flaw’ as it chases College Football Playoff berth

ESPN pointed out Clemson’s “fatal flaw” that could prevent the Tigers from reaching the College Football Playoff in December.

Clemson had a thrilling 51-45 road win over Wake Forest on Saturday. C

lemson needed overtime to escape Truist Field with a win. The game came down to the wire and the offense helped secure the win.

Clemson’s defense surrendered 447 total yards to the Demon Deacons. ESPN college football writer Bill Connelly took note of the defense’s performance and cautioned the issues with Clemson’s defense:

“More specifically, a frighteningly porous pass defense. In my Friday preview, I noted that Clemson’s defensive averages weren’t as good as we might have expected and that Wake Forest might be able to find some success,” Connelly said. I think Sam Hartman’s passing line of 20-for-29 for 337 yards and six touchdowns qualifies as ‘some success.'”

Prior to Saturday’s game, the most points Clemson’s defense a

llowed in a game was 20 points against Louisiana Tech. Wake Forest managed to erupt for 25 more points and had the defense on the ropes in the 2nd half of the game.

Wake Forest exposed several weaknesses within the defense. If Clemson wants to reach the Playoff, the defense will need to play better.

Clemson will host NC State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
