ESPN ranks Trevor Lawrence’s freshman season as one of the best college football history

Trevor Lawrence’s freshman season at Clemson was ranked as one of the best in the sport’s history by ESPN this week.

Bill Connelly examined decades of college football history

and determined that Lawrence’s 2018 campaign is the 4th best season by a freshman of all time.

Lawrence, of course, took over the starting job mid-way through the year and helped lead the Tigers all the way to the National Championship. He threw for 3,280 yards, 30 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions that season.

Here’s Connelly’s analysis:

“One of the most highly touted recruits in history, Lawrence somehow lived up to the hype. He threw for 3,280 yards, 30 touchdowns and just four interceptions, and he somehow improved down the stretch: In his last four games, he completed 66% of his passes and threw for 1,185 yards, nine touchdowns and no interceptions as the Tigers charged to a 15-0 record and their second national title in three years.”

L

awrence’s freshman season ranks above notable standout campaigns like Pittsburgh’s Tony Dorsett, Oklahoma’s Adrian Peterson and Alabama’s Jalen Hurts.

The only freshman seasons to rank above Lawrence in 2018 are Ohio State offensive lineman Orlando Pace, Georgia running back Herschel Walker and Pittsburgh defensive end Hugh Green.

Lawrence is preparing to enter his second NFL season with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
