Clemson defensive lineman Xavier Thomas will miss multiple weeks with an injury he sustained in a scrimmage on Saturday, according to a report.

Per On3’s Matt Connolly, Thomas will miss 4-6 weeks with a foot injury. His report cites sources within the program.

That’s a big loss for the Tigers, who begin conference play in exactly 3 weeks vs. Georgia Tech on Sept. 5. Thomas is a major component of Clemson’s defensive line.

Last season, he posted 6.5 tackles for loss and a career-high 4.5 sacks. The 5th year senior already has 13 sacks in his collegiate career.

There is a bit of silver lining in this news for Clemson: the Tigers have depth at defensive end. They also return top NFL Draft prospect Myles Murphy and veteran KJ Henry. That duo should be able to provide pressure off the edge in September.

However, Clemson would surely love to have Thomas back by the the NC State game on Oct. 1. That matchup vs. the Wolfpack could end up deciding who represents the Atlantic division at the ACC Championship Game.
