ACC responds to Kara Lawson’s accusation about ‘non-regulation’ basketballs used in key matchup

Kara Lawson made a strong accusation after Sunday’s game against Florida State that a men’s basketball was used during the game.

No. 24 Florida State won the game 70-57 over No. 16 Duke in a game at Donald L. Tucker Civic Center in a game that had a heavy impact on ACC standings and projected NCAA Tournament seedings. Lawson alleged in a post-game press conference that a men’s basketball was used in the first half of the game.

“This would never happen in a men’s game. This would never happen. It’s embarrassing for our sport,” she said

.

For context, the circumference of a women’s ball is about an inch smaller than a men’s ball and it is typically 2 ounces lighter.

The ACC sent out a statement Friday morning, and refuted the allegations made by Duke, and that it found no evidence to support

“Upon completion of the game, the conference office was made aware of the allegation and immediately conducted a comprehensive review,” the league wrote in a statement. “This included discussion with all parties involved, including game officials, game administrators, table crew and both schools.”
