Duke coach Mike Elko has been named ACC Coach of the Year for 2022.
Elko beat out Florida State’s Mike Norvell for the honor. He led the Blue Devils to a winning season in just one year on the job.
Elko received 44 votes, according to the ACC’s release. Norvell came in second place with 18 votes. Georgia Tech’s Brent Key, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and North Carolina’s Mack Brown each received one vote.
The Blue Devils went 8-4 this season, marking their first winning campaign since 2018. Duke had won just one ACC game over the previous two seasons before Elko took over. He led them to a 5-3 conference record this season.
If Duke wins its upcoming bowl game, it will a
chieve its first nine-win season since 2014. That was also the last time Duke won five conference games in a single season. That campaign ended with a loss in the Sun Bowl.
Elko has proved to be one of the best hires in all of college football last season. Texas A&M, where he previously served as defensive coordinator before moving to Durham, also had a tough time replacing him this season as the Aggies went just 5-7.
Duke will learn its bowl destination on Sunday.
