ESPN’s Dick Vitale made his return to the booth earlier this week, just weeks after announcing a cancer diagnosis.

Vitale missed the early part of the season as he was going through treatment, but he was in the booth for Gonzaga’s win over UCLA earlier this week. He was emotional in his return, which was something Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski acknowledged in a video message on Wednesday.

“It’s so good to see you back,” Krzyzewski said. “I know you’re very emotional but that’s so darn good. For all the people fighting cancer, the families who are helping those cancer fighters, it was such an encouraging time. Obviously for our game, no one does it like you my man. No one does it like you.

“Just get your rest and hopefully we can see you a lot during the season.”

Vitale took the time to write back a message as well:

Duke still has several more marquee games left on the schedule, including against Gonzaga on Friday night and — of course — two meetings with North Carolina later this year. If Vitale is healthy, expect to see him on the call for multiple Duke games as Krzyzewski goes through his final season.
