Duke freshman Dariq Whitehead undergoes foot surgery

Duke freshman Dariq Whitehead had surgery to repair a fracture in his right foot, Duke announced on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the release, Whitehead suffered the injury during a team workout on Monday.

“We are happy to share that Dariq underwent a successful procedure today, and is in the best care with our doctors and rehabilitation staff,” coach Jon Scheyer said in the release. “We’re confident he’ll be back on the court soon.”

The release did not give any specifics on Whitehead’s injury, but did say the program expects him to play “this fall.”

If healthy, Whitehead is expected to be one of the top freshmen in the country this season. He was a 5-star prospect and the No. 2 overall player in the country for his class, per 247Sports Composite rankings

Listed at 6-foot-6, Whitehead has the ball handling skills and shooting ability to be a very impactful player from Day 1. He’s expected to be a top pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

Duke begins the 2022-23 season on Nov. 7 against Jacksonville.
