Duke survived a late comeback effort from Virginia in its 5-4 win over the Cavaliers on Friday afternoon in Charlottesville.
It was a back-and-forth game, but the Blue Devils took control with 2 runs in the 8th inning to take a 5-4 lead.
In the 9th, Virginia’s first two hitters recorded outs. However, the Cavaliers responded with a single and a walk to put the potential winning run on 1st base.
Jake Gelof, Virginia’s No. 3-hole hitter, stepped to the plate and gave the Blue Devils a scare. With a 2-1 count, Gelof launched a ball to deep left-center field, but it died at the warning track and was caught by Duke’s Tyler Albright to end the game.
Here’s a replay:
Duke is now 1 win away from its first trip to the College World Series since 1961. The Blue Devils have only reached that stage 3 times in program history.
Game 2 will be played on Saturday at 12 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 2.
