Manny Diaz is closing on a key SMU assistant to reportedly serve as Duke’s offensive coordinator. It is also an assistant with ties to Diaz from the head coach’s time at Miami.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Diaz and the Blue Devils are expected to hire SMU co-OC and QB coach Jonathan Brewer to become Duke’s OC. That expected hiring would include Brewer installing a similar wide-open offensive system to the one operated by Rhett Lashlee, Diaz’s previous OC at Miami.

Lashlee — now the head coach at SMU — served as Diaz’s OC and QBs coach for Miami during the 2020-21 seasons. During that time span, Brewer served as a senior offensive quality control analyst for the Hurricanes. Brewer held a similar role under Lashlee from 2018-19 at SMU.

On paper, it looks to be a solid hiring for Diaz’s staff if the move does indeed become official. SMU QB Preston Stone threw for 28 touchdowns, the Mustangs averaged over 6 yards per play, averaged 40.6 points per game and went 11-2 as a team during the 2023 season.

We’ll see if Brewer can produce anything close to those numbers in the ACC with the Blue Devils.
