Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski addressed the DWI incident involving his grandson, Michael Savarino, and Paolo Banchero on Tuesday night.
Krzyzewski said they would handle the matter “internally” and that it was a “violation of our standards.”
According to the Fayetteville Observer, Savarino was driving and was pulled over for a stop sign violation. Banchero was in the backseat and was charged with aiding and abetting DWI, but was not arrested at the scene.
“It’s two different situations,” Krzyzewski told reporters after Duke’s 92-52 win over Gardner-Webb. “Headlines might make it look like it’s the same, it’s not.”
That approach from Krzyzewski might explain why Banchero played in the Blue Devils’ win on Tuesday night while Savarino was not with the team. Banchero played 26 minutes, producing 10 points and 8 rebounds in the win.
Duke is now 4-0 this season and will host Lafayette on Friday.
