In a draft day stunner, former Duke star Paolo Banchero was selected No. 1 overall in the 2022 NBA Drat on Thursday night.

The Orlando Magic shocked the NBA community by picking Banchero over Auburn forward Jabari Smith Jr.

Banchero’s odds to go No. 1 overall had risen in recent days, but this is still a stunning result. Smith was the heavy favorite to go No. 1 overall with less than an hour before the draft.

Banchero will now pair with Franz Wagner in Orlando’s front court. The Magic also have former North Carolina guard Cole Anthony and ex-Gonzaga star Jalen Suggs in the back court.

Several of Banchero’s former teammates — AJ Griffin, Mark Williams, Wendell Moore Jr. and Trevor Keels — are expected to hear their names called at some point on

Tonight will close the book on Mike Krzyzewski’s illustrious history with the NBA Draft. Krzyzewski helped produce 4 former No. 1 overall picks while at Duke — Elton Brand, Kyrie Irving, Zion Williamson and now Banchero.

Banchero is the first Duke player to be selected in the top-5 since Williamson went No. 1 overall in the 2019 NBA Draft. RJ Barrett went No. 3 in that same draft, too.

During his lone season at Duke, Banchero averaged a team-high 17 points per game. He was Duke’s top offensive weapon throughout the season and was a big reason why the Blue Devils reached the 2022 Final Four.

Banchero is expected to play Summer League with the Magic. That slate of games will get underway in July.
