Report: Jon Scheyer close to making 1st official hire as Duke’s head coach

New Duke coach Jon Scheyer is reportedly closing in on the first staff hire of tenure.

According to multiple reports, former Elon coach Mike Schrage is going to join Duke’s staff this offseason. Schrage resigned from his post at Elon on Tuesday.

Schrage served as Duke’s director of basketball operations from 2002-08. In 2009, he joined Stanford’s staff as an assistant coach. He’s also been an assistant at Butler and Ohio State.

He will replace Scheyer, who is taking over for the now-retired Mike Krzyzewski.

Scheyer will have to make at least one more hire during this coaching cycle. Nolan Smith has reportedly accepted a job on Kenny Payne’s staff at Louisville. Smith’s father played at Louisville.

Former Duke player Amile Jefferson, who is currently the Blue Devils’ director of player development, could be a candidate for that job. It’s also possible that Scheyer will look to fill that position externally.

Despite the turnover on Duke’s coaching staff, the Blue Devils continue to recruit at a high level. Duke as the No. 1 overall recruiting class in the country for the class of 2022, according to 247Sports Composite rankings
