Temple names starting quarterback ahead of Week 1 matchup vs. Duke

Duke’s Week 1 opponent, Temple, named a starting quarterback on Thursday afternoon.

The Owls will be led by D’Wan Mathis, who played in 7 games for them last season.

Here’s the announcement:

Last season, Mathis completed 59.5% of his passes for 1,223 yards, 6 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. He also rushed for 82 yards and 1 touchdown.

Mathis is a former Georgia transfer who played for the Bulldogs in 2020. He transferred to Temple prior to the start of the 2021 season.

Duke and Temple last played in 2018. The B

lue Devils won 56-27 in Shreveport in the Independence Bowl. Daniel Jones threw for 5 touchdowns in the win.

Duke has not named its starting quarterback for Week 1. Riley Leonard and Jordan Moore are competing for the chance to be the first QB1 of the Mike Elko era.

The Blue Devils will open the season at 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday, Sept. 2.
