Wendell Moore Jr. takes responsibility for Duke’s last-minute loss to Miami

Duke held a 3-point lead over Miami with just 45 seconds left on Saturday night, but the Blue Devils couldn’t close out the game.

The Hurricanes responded with a pair of layups, a free throw and multiple defensive stops to hand Duke its first ACC loss of the season. After the game, junior guard Wendell Moore Jr. took ownership over the loss.

“I really think it all starts with me. I feel like tonight I didn’t lead the guys the way I was supposed to,” Moore told reporters. “Up three with 30 seconds left, I feel like as a leader, I can’t let our team lose that game.”

Moore had one of his worst games of the season vs. Miami. He scored just 12 points on 5-of-12 shooting and 1-of-6 from 3-point range. One of those 3-point misses came in the final minute as Duke was looking to re-take the lead. It w

as an uncharacteristic night for a player who’s been amongst the ACC’s best all season long.

Moore also turned the ball over 6 times, contributing to Duke’s 17 total turnovers. According to coach Mike Krzyzewski, that was the story of the game. He attributed the team’s turnovers to “rust” coming off a length COVID-19 pause.

Duke is still on track to be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Miami is far from a bad loss — the Hurricanes are now 5-0 in ACC play and have won nine straight games overall.

Duke is back in action on Wednesday at Wake Forest.
