The Dan Mullen era may be nearing an end in Gainesville.

Florida lost 40-17 to South Carolina on Saturday, moving the Gators to 4-5 on the season and 21-12 in SEC play since Mullen took over in 2018.

The Gators also dealt with controversy during the week. Mullen’s dismissal of a recruiting question — and the subsequent backlash — caused the Gators to cancel all media availability for the week.

South Carolina put up a season-high 40 points on the Gators’ struggling defense. Quarterback Jason Brown became the third Gamecock QB to start a game this year, and he did well. He completed 14-of-24 passes for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Kevin Harris and Zaquandre White each rushed for over 100 yards as well and averaged more than 8 yards per carry.

This loss could put Florida’s athletic department in a difficult spot this week. Mullen has a buyout of $12 million if he’s fired this season, but fans are asking for a change at head coach.
