Florida State picked up a big boost on Wednesday with a commitment from Brown transfer Jaylan Gainey.

Gainey was one of the best-available defensive players in the transfer portal. He’s a two-time Ivy League defensive player of the year.

Here’s Gainey’s announcement:

He’s 6-foot-9, 220 pounds and should fit perfectly in Leonard Hamilton’s defensive system.

Offensively, he should contribute as role player. Last year at Brown, he averaged 9.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.

It’s worth noting that he’s not a shooter — he doesn’t attempt 3-pointers and is below average from the free throw line. When he does score, it’s usually around the rim. He shot 70.3 percent from the field last season.

Defensively, he’s an elite rim protector. He averaged 2.2 blocks per game this season and has the length to be an excellent defender in the ACC.

Florida State battled injuries this past season and missed the NCAA Tournament. The Seminoles finished with a 17-14 overall record.
