Florida State’s deadline to serve notice to the ACC that it would leave the conference prior to the 2024 season passed on Aug. 15.
However, according to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde, the Noles could still act quickly if they intend to depart the ACC in 2025. Forde cited multiple ACC sources who said they “would not be shocked” if Florida State served notice to the league in the coming “days or weeks.”
It’s important to note that there is no longer a looming deadline for FSU to give notice of its intentions to leave the league that quickly. Florida State has until August of 2024 to notify the ACC if it plans to leave for 2025.
However, Forde’s report also points out that giving formal notice early in the process will give the university more “runway” to make complicated decisions about the future at Florida State.
Of course, Florida State is still bound to the ACC’s Grant of Rights, which runs through 2036. While FSU leadership has been vocal in recent weeks
about potentially leaving the conference, it’s unclear how the university would accomplish that move with more than a decade still left on the Grant of Rights.
It also remains unclear whether or not Florida State would have an offer from the Big Ten or the SEC (or both) should it decide to leave the ACC.
Both leagues are already set to expand in 2024 with the SEC adding Texas and Oklahoma and with the Big Ten adding USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington.
