Florida State offensive lineman Kayden Lyles will miss the 2022 season after suffering an injury during fall camp, the program has announced.

Lyles is in his first season with the Seminoles after transferring from Wisconsin for this season. He started 16 games over 3 seasons for the Badgers.

Here’s Lyles’ statement:

“We have a group of dedicated offensive linemen, and I am going to use the experiences I’ve gained through 5 years of playing college football to help them develop any way I can,” Lyles wrote in-part. “Thank you to everyone for the support. I’m going to approach every day with a mindset of improvement, and I’m looking forward to seeing what this team will do this season.”

This is a big loss for the Seminoles, who brought in numerous transfers to help stabilize their offensive line. Lyles was one of the best — he was named to the Rimington Trophy watch list in 2021.

Lyles also suffered a season-ending injury in 2020. He made just 4 starts that season but started 13 games for Wisconsin in 2019 as he helped lead the Badgers to the Rose Bowl.

Lyles was expected to play center for Florida State this season. Maurice Smith, who started 8 games for FSU in that spot last season, will now likely be the unquestioned starter.

FSU opens the 2022 season with Duquesne on Aug. 27.
