Former Florida State linebacker is staying in the ACC.

Gainer, who entered the transfer portal earlier this offseason, announced on Friday afternoon that he is transferring to North Carolina.

Here’s his announcement:

Gainer is a Tallahassee native and was a member of Florida State’s 2018 recruiting class. He was a 4-star prospect and the No. 18 outside linebacker in the country for that cycle, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

Over the last five seasons with the Noles, Gainer totaled 210 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and six sacks. He also forced five fumbles over the course of his time with Florida State.

However, Gainer played mostly as a reserve in 2022. He made just 17 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack in seven games this season.

He now heads to North Carolina where he will be a veteran presence on a Tar Heels defense that has struggled for the past several years.

Florida State is not scheduled to face Carolina during the 2023 season. Gainer has one year of eligibility remaining.
