Florida State coach Mike Norvell is very excited about the development of freshman quarterback AJ Duffy.

Norvell told reporters on Tuesday that Duffy is as far along in his development as any young quarterback he’s had.

“AJ is probably as far along for a newcomer at quarterback than maybe anyone I’ve had,” Norvell said. “I’m excited about where he’s going to go.”

It’s worth noting this praise from Norvell was unprompted — it actually came from a question that was asked about sophomore quarterback Tate Rodemaker.

Duffy was a big recruiting get for the Seminoles in the class of 2022. An IMG Academy product, Duffy was the No. 11 quarterback in the country, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

Despite his advanced development, Florida State can afford to take its time with Duffy. Jordan Travis is back after playing exceptionally well at times last season and is fully expected to be FSU’s No. 1 option this year.

However, if Travis leaves for the NFL after this season, Duffy could be in a good spot to win FSU’s starting quarterback job as a redshirt freshman in 2023.

FSU opens the 2022 season with Duquesne on Aug. 27.
