Key Florida State basketball player suspended for receiving illegal benefits

Florida State freshman Baba Miller will miss the first 16 games of the Seminoles’ season.

The program announced that news on Friday afternoon, saying its final appeal had been decided. Miller has been suspended for receiving travel benefits to and from Spain.

Florida State’s press release states that Miller and his family immediately re-paid the benefits after learning about “relevant” NCAA rules. FSU also says the violation took place prior to the Noles recruiting him.

“I am very disappointed with the committee’s decision based on the facts presented,” FSU athletic director Michael Alford said in a statement. “The decision seems disproportionate and inconsistent in today’s modern environment. It’s unfortunate that Baba will have to endure this penalty.”

Miller is one of the most talented players on Florida State’s 2022-23 roster. Despite his relative inexperience, Miller is arguably the top pro prospect the Seminoles have for this season.

He was the No. 43 overall player and the No. 10 center in the class of 2023, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

Miller will be eligible to return on Jan. 11 against Wake Forest.
