Patrick Payton, Florida State DL, announces future plans
Patrick Payton intends to enter the transfer portal and play elsewhere in 2024, he announced on Tuesday night.
Payton is a significant loss for Florida State. He recorded 13.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks this past season as he helped anchor a defensive line that was one of the top units in the ACC.
Here’s his announcement:
Im Sorry Nole Nation I Plan To Enter The Transfer Portal…..

Payton will immediately become one of the top defensive linemen in the transfer portal. He will have 2 years of eligibility at his next destination.
Florida State could also lose several other key players from its front seven this season. Jared Verse and Braden Fiske are expected to turn pro. Linebackers Kalen DeLoach and Tatum Bethune are also finishing up their senior seasons.
Florida State will likely be active in the transfer portal to replaces those players, as it has been over the past couple of cycles. It’s hard to argue any team in the country has a higher hit-rate in the transfer portal than FSU does, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Verse, Fiske, Bethune and Fentrell Cypress are amongst FSU’s top defensive transfers over the past couple of years.
Florida State will face Georgia in the Orange Bowl to close out the 2023 season.
