Florida State redshirt freshman Joshua Burrell is eyeing a position change.
Burrell came to Tallahassee as a wide receiver, but he’s started working out at running back during fall camp. Coach Mike Norvell made that announcement on Tuesday morning.
Norvell called Burrell a “very versatile athlete” and indicated that the switch is going well so far.
“He looked great today,” Norvell said after practice
. “It was a really good first day for him. With his size and speed … he’s got great feet … I thought he did a really good job today.”
The move could be connected to the loss of running back CJ Campbell, who was in line to be Florida State’s 4th-string tail back this season. Campbell will miss the 2022 season with an injury.
Norvell said Burrell would still be working out some at receiver this fall.
Burrell is listed at 6-foot-2, 217 pounds. If the switch becomes official, he would become the tallest and heaviest running back on Florida State’s roster. Trey Benson is the only other running back on the roster who is taller than 6-foot and heavier than 200 pounds.
Florida State’s other running back depth includes Lawrance Toafili and Treshaun Ward. Toafili earned some big-time praise from coach Norvell on Tuesday. Freshman Rodney Hill is also in the mix.
Florida State opens the 2022 season with Duquesne on Aug. 27.
