Georgia Tech reportedly set to hire NBA assistant to be next head coach

Georgia Tech has reportedly found its next head coach only a few days after it fired Josh Pastner.

The Yellow Jackets are expected to hire Boston Celtics assistant Damon Stoudamire, who is finalizing a 5-year deal, ESPN reported. T

he school’s Board of Trustees is planning to approve the hire Monday.

Stoudamire has an extensive college background, as he went 23-10 at Pacific in 2019-20 that helped him receive the West Coast Conference coach of the year. He went 32-19 his final 2 years and 71-77 overall at Pacific, leaving the job to join Ime Udoka on the Celtics staff prior to last season.

Stoudamire has also worked in college at Rice, Memphis (twice) a

nd Arizona as an assistant coach, and combined, he has more than a decade overall of college coaching experience.

Stoudamire has informed the Celtics that he plans to take the job and make the move back to college.

Pastner went to just one NCAA tournament in his 7 seasons at Georgia Tech, and went 109-114, with the lone NCAA appearance coming after winning the ACC tournament in 2021.

Georgia Tech hasn’t reached the NCAA tournament in consecutive seasons since 2004 and 2005.
