Georgia Tech played spoiler on Saturday night in Chapel Hill.

The Yellow Jackets defeated North Carolina 21-17 on Saturday night while playing the best defense of the season against Heisman hopeful Drake Maye.

Maye completed only 16-of-30 passes for 220 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception. This was the first game of Maye’s season where he did not throw a passing touchdown.

North Carolina, which entered tonight’s game with the best offense in the ACC, did not score in the second half. It ultimately wasted a solid performance from the Tar Heels’ defense, which limited Georgia Tech to just three touchdowns.

Georgia Tech quarterback Zach Gibson was excellent in this game. He completed 13-of-17 passes for 174 yards. The Yellow Jackets had four different rushers gain 35+ yards on the ground.

The loss ends any slim hope North Carolina had at reaching the College Football Playoff. The Tar Heels also likely do not have a path to a New Year’s Six bowl game unless they upset Clemson in the ACC Championship Game.

North Carolina still has one big regular season game left. UNC will host NC State next weekend. A win would give Carolina its first 10-win season since 2015.

Georgia Tech is now 5-6 on the year and could get to bowl eligibility if it upsets No. 1 Georgia in Week 13.
