Report: Georgia Tech expected to hire former Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke as QB coach

Georgia Tech is expected to hire former Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke as its next QB coach, according to multiple reports.

Weinke has previously served in that role for Tennessee and is a former head coach of IMG Academy. He also spent two years as the QB coach of the St. Louis Rams.

The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman confirmed the news on Monday morning. Rivals was first to report.

Quarterback is an important area of improvement for Georgia Tech going forward. Jeff Sims and Jordan Yates split time last season and each completed 59.9 percent of their passes. Sims was more efficient (7.8 yards per attempt) but Yates did a better job of taking care of the b

all (6-to-2 TD-to-INT ratio).

Weinke, of course, has plenty of experience in the ACC. He won the 2000 Heisman Trophy while at Florida State and had a tremendous career with the Seminoles that culminated in the 1999 National Championship.

Georgia Tech head coach Geoff Collins is likely on the hot seat entering next season. He has won exactly 3 games in each of his first 3 seasons at the helm.

Georgia Tech has not yet announced the hire.
