Denny Crum, former Louisville coach and Hall-of-Famer, passes away at 86

Denny Crum passed away on Tuesday morning, Louisville has announced. He was 86 years old.

Crum led the Cardinals’ basketball program for 31 seasons from 1971-2001. He won 2 National Championships and led the program to 6 Final Four appearances. He was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 1994.

He retired after the 2001 season and later served as a special assistant to Louisville’s president. The court at Louisville’s Freedom Hall was officially named after Crum in 2007. When the program moved to the KFC Yum Center, the court kept its namesake.

Crum led Louisville basketball through 3 different conference affiliations: the Missouri V

alley Conference, the Metro Conference and Conference-USA. He brought Louisville to the 2nd weekend of the NCAA Tournament as a member of all 3 conferences.

He finished his coaching career with a record of 675-295. He remains the winningest head coach in program history by a wide margin. No other Louisville coach has won more than 450 games with the program.

Per the university’s press release, arrangements will be announced once finalized.
