Felton Spencer, a former No. 1 pick who starred at Louisville before an NBA career that spanned over a decade, has died, according to Cardinals writer and local media personality Jody Demling.
A Louisville native, Spencer was an all-state performer in high school before signing with the Cardinals under Denny Crum. He averaged a team-high 14.9 points and 8.9 rebounds per game en route to all-conference honors in 1990.
After a successful college career, he entered the NBA Draft, where he was taken No. 6 overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was named to the NBA’s All-Rookie 2nd team in 1991 and was eventually traded to the Jazz in 1993. He also played for the Orlando Magic, Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, and New York Knicks before his retirement in 2002.
Spencer eventually entered the coaching ranks, serving as an assistant at Spalding and later Bellarmine.
