Louisville announces contract settlement details with Chris Mack

Louisville officially parted ways with basketball coach Chris Mack on Wednesday afternoon.

The separation included terms for a contact buyout. Interim athletic director Josh Heird told reporters on Wednesday that the school will pay Mack $4.8 million over the next three years.

Mack’s buyout was reportedly $12 million prior to the 2021-22 season.

Louisville has lost five of its last six games and currently has a 5-5 record in ACC play. The Cardinals have lost several games to teams outside the KenPom top-100 this season, including DePaul, Western Kentucky and Pittsburgh.

Louisville’s next coach will be tasked with returning the Cardinals to national prominence. The program hasn’t made it to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament since the 2014-15 season.

The Cardinals are expected to begin a national search for their next head coach in the coming days. Heird told reporters on Wednesday that he’ll be prioritizing “integrity” in this search.

Mike Pegues will serve as Louisville’s interim head coach. The Cardinals face Duke on Saturday.
