5-star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is impressed with Miami’s new WR coach.

The Canes are reportedly hiring Kevin Beard for the role. Beard played at Miami from 2001-03 and has been coaching in college football for most of the last decade.

On Tuesday night, Smith apparently heard from the Canes’ newest assistant coach. Here’s what he said:

Smith is currently committed to Ohio State is a top target for Miami in the class of 2024. He’s the No. 2 overall prospect and the No. 1 receiver in the country, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

Smith attends Chaminade-Madonna Prep in Opa Locka, Florida. He’s listed at 6-foot-3, 185 pounds.

Here are some highlights from his junior season:

What this means for Miami

Smith has become Miami’s top target in the class of 2024. Having a primary recruiter who can appeal to an elite, local prospect like Smith will be crucial if the Canes hope to flip him from Ohio State.

Miami is off to a slow start in this cycle. The Canes only have 1 commitment so far in the 2024 class and it’s from unranked kicker Abram Murray. Any momentum that Miami can generate at this point is a big win.

Miami has undergone numerous staff changes this offseason, which is likely one reason why recruiting has been stagnant. However, that’s expected to change in the coming months.
