Miami has spent most of this year looking for playmakers on both sides of the ball, and a pair of them may have emerged in Miami’s win 20-14 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday.

Receiver Colbie Young and defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor both had career-days vs. the Hokies.

Young caught 9 passes for 110 yards and 1 touchdown in the win. It was by far the best game Young has had with the Canes since he arrived from Lackawanna Community College with the 2022 recruiting class.

In addition to his eye-popping numbers, Young made a pair of highlight reel plays. He made a one-handed grab to set up Miami’s first score of the game and then he scored a touchdown himself later in the contest.

Here are those catches:

Miami has been desperately looking for a No. 1 receiver option as it deals with injuries to players like Xavier Restrepo and Jacolby George. Young’s presence could become even more important if Will Mallory has to miss significant time.

On the defensive side of the ball, Mesidor had his best game with the Canes as well. He recorded 3.5 sacks and 7 total tackles against the Hokies.

Mesidor was a disruptive force for Grant Wells all night long. Without his contributions, Virginia Tech may have been able to make a run at this game in the fourth quarter.

Mesidor now has 5 sacks and 6 tackles for loss on the season.

Miami will need both players to continue performing at a high level in conference play. The Canes face Duke next weekend.
