ESPN’s Greg McElroy is a big fan of Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke and the Canes as a whole in 2022.

When evaluating Miami’s expectations for this upcoming season, McElroy said the reason why Miami can win “right now” — even with a first-year coach in Mario Cristobal — is because of Van Dyke.

“The reason why we think (Miami) can win right now is because of Tyler Van Dyke,” McElroy said on Always College Football on Wednesday. “He actually has sneaky mobility. He’s a really solid athlete.

“He’s a big reason why people are looking at Miami out of the Coastal and the ACC as a dark horse, not just to win that division, but to win the league overall.”

Van Dyke was excellent last season for the Hurricanes as he filled in for an injured D’Eriq King. He threw for 2,931 yards and 25 touchdowns as a redshirt freshman.

He really hit his stride in Miami’s revamped offense over the final 6 games. He threw for 300+ yards and 3+ touchdowns in each of those contests, leading the Canes to a 5-1 record over that span. That stretch included a pair of ranked wins over NC State and Pittsburgh.

Now, Van Dyke has big expectations in 2022 after being a relative unknown a season ago. He finished third in the ACC’s preseason Player of the Year voting and Miami was picked to win the ACC Coastal — something it hasn’t done since 2017. Miami has never won the ACC Championship since joining the league in 2004.

Miami opens the 2022 season with Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 3.
