Mario Cristobal hinted on Wednesday that QB Tyler Van Dyke may make his return sooner than expected.

It was previously reported that the QB would miss multiple weeks while recovering. Van Dyke exited the Duke game in the second quarter with a shoulder injury, and was later seen sporting a sling. Cristobal had said on Monday that he “wasn’t sure” about Van Dyke’s status for Saturday’s matchup against Virginia.

On Wednesday, Cristobal provided another update, saying the QB had “improved a bunch”. It appears the QB is healing more quickly than first projected. Cristobal stopped short of saying Van Dyke would play on Saturday, mentioning there would be another update on Friday.

The Canes struggled in Van Dyke’s absence, losing 45-21 to Duke in Week 8 after he exited the game. Backup Jake Garcia has filled in for Van Dyke, but threw three interceptions in the loss to Duke.

The 3-4 ‘Canes face Virginia this Saturday with hopes of getting back on track for bowl eligibility. Kickoff is at 12:30 p.m. ET.
