Mario Cristobal praises Tyler Van Dyke for leadership, work ethic: ‘His desire to be great is unmatched’

New Miami coach Mario Cristobal is excited about Tyler Van Dyke’s upcoming sophomore season with the Hurricanes.

One day before Van Dyke will lead the Hurricanes in their spring game, Cristobal spoke about his talented signal caller on Packer and Durham.

In addition to his passing ability, Cristobal praised Van Dyke’s leadership and work ethic this spring.

“Tremendous leader,” Cristobal said of his starting quarterback. “The guy is an awesome teammate. His attention to detail and his desire to be great is unmatched. He is always up in here. He is always watching film. He’s always pulling teammates aside and bringing them with him so they can get better.

“He wants team success. He’s not a guy that’s all about himself and whatnot. This guy is all about the guys around him”

As a freshman last season, Van Dyke completed 62.3% of his passes for 2,931 yards, 25 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. That production came after Miami was forced to re-work its offense after starter D’Eriq King suffered a season-ending injury.

Going into 2022, Van Dyke is an early candidate for the Heisman Trophy. He led Miami to two ranked wins down the stretch last season and threw for 300+ yards and 3+ touchdowns in each of the Canes’ final 6 games.

Miami opens the 2022 season with Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 3.
