Mario Cristobal says Miami will drop turnover chain: ‘It’s not part of our culture’

Miami’s turnover chain is no more.

The tradition, which began in 2017 under coach Mark Richt, will not carry into the Mario Cristobal era. The new Miami coach delivered that news through college football insider Brett McMurphy on Wednesday night.

“It’s not part of our culture,” Cristobal told McMurphy on Wednesday night.

While the turnover chain produced great results for the Canes in 2017, the returns have been diminishing in recent years. Miami won 10 games that season (and had a Power 5-best 31 takeaways) but the Canes are just 28-21 over the past 5 seasons.

Cristobal’s impact in Coral Gables has already been felt in numerous ways since his arrival from Oregon this offseason. The biggest example is perhaps Miami’s 2023 recruiting class, which currently ranks No. 10 nationally

and is expected to rise in the coming weeks.

Cristobal also brought in one of the best staffs in the country this offseason. His staff includes offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, co-defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, co-defensive coordinator Charlie Strong and offensive line coach Alex Mirabal.

Cristobal will likely address this — and a myriad of other topics — at ACC Kickoff in Charlotte on Thursday.
